Medical Staff
Cruise lines employ medical staff like doctors and nurses on board. Typically they treat minor health issues for passengers and crew, but they must have experience with emergency care so they can respond to serious issues. A cruise ship doctor may make between $4,000 and $6,400 per month, and a nurse may make up to $2,900, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS)

Other Salaries
The website Cruise Ship Jobs also reports that a cruise ship nurse practitioner can expect to earn $4,300 to $5,100 per month, depending on the cruise line and her experience, while a cruise ship lead/chief nurse can earn between $4,000 and $4,900 per month.

Benefits
Cruise ship salaries tend to be on the low side; the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the median nurse salary was $64,690 per year, or about $5,390 per month, as of May 2010. However, cruise ship nurses receive free room and board. They are officers who have private cabins and privileges such as eating in the officers' dining room. Also, in their off time nurses can participate in cruise ship activities ranging from sunbathing and scuba diving to various activities available when the ship is in port. Some cruise lines also give their nurses free cruises.

Work Schedule
Typically, cruise ship nurses may work for 4 to 6 months, take a break of 6 weeks or more, and then return to work. The exact work schedule varies by cruise line and will also affect how much a nurse earns each year. For many cruise ship nurses, part of the attraction of the job is both the extended time off and the ability to travel.

  2. Being a nurse here in the Philippines is very hard because you make a huge amount of work while receiving a small amount of money. That's why my cousin was dreaming to land a job somewhere else out of the country. She passed the exams but didn't pursue because of huge placement fee. Anyways, good to read that nurses can be deployed to cruise ships. Maybe, we should inquire to famous cruise ship companies in the Philippines like NSMS.
